All 5 baby bluejays have flown the coop!!! They have been hopping all around my back yard, climbing the back porch steps, picnic table, and grill. One even hopped over to the garage to watch my son at work. They can only take very short, and not very high, flights. The parents have been chasing other birds and stray cats away.It has really been a remarkable time for my family, right from the beginning: nest-building; mother bird sitting on the eggs; the little fledglings; watching them leave the nest. My grandsons watched them, too, and learned a little about the birds and the bees! Well, the birds, anyway. I worry about them making it til they can really fly, and I'll miss greeting them every morning. My cat, Scruffy, won't miss them though---he's been cooped up inside all day for a few days now, since the 1st baby jumped down from the nest. The bluejay parents both went after him a few days ago, and winged him in the rear end! He ran away and we couldn't find him for a couple of hours!I'm downloading several pics of the babies for you to see-------enjoy!

  1. I love the facial look on the young birds---it is just too cute! Lew would love watching the little birds and so would I. Nice picture of Jamie---he sure got close to that one bird! Thanks, Carol! (See ya tomorrow!)

Kerry and I have been watching the same thing down here. We get really nevous when the little fellas are just hopping around on the ground. Yesterday afternoon we were having a beverage on the front porch when we hear a "plop!" in the lawn. A little birdie either jumped or was pushed from its nest. He/she hobbled around, then just started running, about 10 feet at a time. Too cute! We were on the lookout for stay cats. When our (indoor only) cats watched it from the window, the parents even flew at the window! Wild!
