Christmas 2010 with new catnip toy |
Tonight we mourn the loss of our beloved cat, Scruffy. He came to us about 6 years ago and won all our hearts over. What a brave, loving, and grateful companion he was, right up to the end. We were only told Thursday evening, when he was at the Vet for his routine blood work that he had every 2-3 weeks, that he had cancer and that we should mercifully have him put to rest in a day or two so he wouldn't suffer(he had been hardly eating for the last 2 weeks and was starting to stagger around---the vet initially thought it might be an ear problem that was making him lose his balance). I took today off from work so I could spend one last day with him, and carried him all around the back yard that he loved so much. I petted him all day and made him comfortable, and he seemed happy and softly purring. Then at 10PM he walked unsteadily over to his bed and lay down. I soon became aware of a change in his breathing, and just lay down on the floor with him and held his paws until he took his last agonal breath. It was very quick, and he knew we loved him so much. We were going to take him Saturday morning to end his suffering, but I prayed all day for God to just let him die at home in his bed where he was surrounded by his family of human and cat friends. And God answered my prayer. I'm so grateful. He enriched our lives, and I know we enriched his. God Bless you Sruffa-Duffa---love ya to pieces!
I am sitting here crying like a baby. God bless you and Jim for giving Scruffy so much love and easing his pain. My thoughts and prayers are with you today. Love,Nancy
ReplyDeleteGod was kind to this little creature and to you, too. I'm so glad he went at home, with you by his side. Scruffy was unique. Even if you had a bad day, just looking at his picture (for the rest of us) made us smile. You and Jimmy rescued him from a life of suffering and pain and he had many wonderful years in a loving atmosphere. Farewell, little guy, and thanks for the memories. Love ya Carol & Jimmy.
ReplyDeleteI agree with N&C, and echo the obvious: that these wonderful creatures bring us unconditional love and we are blessed to have them in our lives. What a wonderful life you guys gave Scruffy, and what a wonderful blessing it was for you to have had him in your lives. And I also agree that God is so loving and merciful, and let him spend his last moments in the arms of those that loved him the most. How awesome is that? Love ya' - Timmy
ReplyDeleteThese pictures are breaking my heart. I know your pain, Carol, and understand it. I was a basket case for quite a while after we lost Thor. Still, the photos are wonderful. He was sooooo lucky to be home with you!
